Current study page: Reading literature as a whole work
The earlier reference below is retained for continuity.
Whole-work interpretation studio¶
Canonical target: EX-M11; interfaces with EX-M07, EX-M08, EX-M09, EX-M12, EX-M13, PH-M03 and HW14.
Encounter before commentary¶
Read a complete play rather than a plot summary. The existing Hamlet route
(SRC-EX-014, SRC-EX-022) points to the
Folger reading edition.
Use a legally available edition and record its editor; do not reproduce the edition
in this repository. A first reading may use glossary support but not AI summaries
as a substitute for the work. Accommodations can change medium without removing
the encounter with the complete dramatic structure.
Keep an act-by-act record of what each character knows, asserts, conceals and misunderstands. Separate what an audience sees from what a character can know. Record two passages whose significance changes after later scenes. Do not resolve every contradiction into a single psychological diagnosis.
Form and interpretation¶
Choose a short scene and mark turn-taking, interruptions, changes of register, verse/prose shifts, imagery and explicit stage directions. Distinguish textual evidence from a director's staging choice. Read the scene aloud in two plausible ways; explain how cadence or silence changes an inference without changing words.
Construct two competing readings of an important action. Each reading must explain awkward evidence rather than ignoring it. Identify where genre, dramatic convention, historical vocabulary or textual variation constrains interpretation. An attractive theme is not evidence that every image supports it.
Transformation and comparison¶
Transform the scene into a short prose narrative with a restricted point of view. Then reconstruct it as dialogue. Explain what is lost: timing, ambiguity, shared attention, dramatic irony or the audience's interpretive labor. This makes form an object of inquiry rather than packaging for a message.
Pair the work with a complete short work from another dramatic or narrative tradition, chosen with qualified source/translation guidance. Reconstruct each work on its own terms before comparison. Do not make the second work an exotic illustration of categories fixed by the first. Record translation choices and avoid treating a national label as a homogeneous tradition.
Unseen assessment¶
An examiner supplies a short unfamiliar passage and enough context to avoid a trivia test. Produce a close reading with an alternative interpretation, then a brief performance or transformation. Explain one point where more context could reverse the reading. After a delay, reconnect a previously read scene to the whole work without a generated synopsis.
Internalize enough vocabulary and sequence to reason fluently. Reconstruct interpretations and evaluate evidence. Retrieve edition history and unfamiliar terms. AI can supply an adversarial reading only after the learner's own attempt; the learner must find its unsupported inference. No generated essay establishes independent literary judgment.
Examiner guidance¶
Assess attention to language, form, whole-work relations, contextual restraint, alternative readings and revision. Do not reward quotation quantity, fashionable terminology or agreement with an examiner's preferred interpretation. Strong work can defend ambiguity precisely. Plot recall alone is insufficient; imaginative novelty without textual warrant is also insufficient.
Use examiner calibration. This studio develops one implementation route, not proof that the branch's entire canon is globally mature.
